KSMRT operates in an area which is diverse, covering open fell and moorland as well as steep and craggy hillsides; all places where one might expect the team's expertise to be called upon to assist in case of difficulty. What is probably less obvious is that the team's activities also take it into the local community, for example helping farmers to recover trapped sheep or providing personnel or equipment where help is needed, perhaps as an aid to the police or ambulance service. Details of the most recent incidents in which the team has been involved can be seen by clicking the links below.
Whilst KSMRT might not be called out quite as frequently as some of our neighbouring Lakeland teams, members are often called upon to assist teams in other areas and the level of skill and knowledge required cannot therefore be allowed to fall short. The range of different types of incident to which the team is asked to respond also demonstrates the valuable role the team plays in this rural area.
In addition, the team also actively provides support for local community events, such as the Kirkby Stephen Yomp, the Nine Standards Fell Race on New Year's Day, The Eden Valley Fun Run and other open air events in the area.

Team members also regularly take part in presentations and demonstrations to local schools, youth groups and interested organisations, with visits to the team's base in Kirkby Stephen often being possible.

Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team actively support The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Young people from local schools, engaged in DOE projects, have use of a room and equipment at the Rescue Base. Two team members have acted as supervisors for the students.
