The map below shows the operational area of Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team. Members of the team have an intimate knowledge of the area – this local expertise is vital in planning searches and effecting rescues. The police, often in response to 999/112 calls, instigate the majority of call-outs. A discussion between the police and team leaders decides the appropriate level of response to the incident. All team vehicles are equipped ready to go at a few minutes' notice. The speed of response can be critical for the survival of the casualty in some cases. Incidents close to the boundary with another team's area might result in both, or several, teams being involved in the operation. The active co-operation that exists between local teams plays a vital role in such circumstances.
